Yes — you're right. When you lift an ornament out of water, a thin film of water clings to it. A wet article weighs more. Here is exactly how the system is designed around that.
Water clings on the way out — chains and filigree can hold several centigrams. So nobody ever weighs the article wet.
Before any weighing in air, the article is dried with a cloth for 30–60 seconds. And an article returned wet is itself logged as a red flag.
The anti-swap proof is the reading taken while fully submerged. Under water, clinging film cannot exist — buoyancy depends only on the metal's volume.
